After the one-year long sting to bust Amish farmers from selling their “contraband” aka raw milk over state lines, one defender of the Constitution introduced legislation to legalize it.
HR 1830, introduced today by Texas Congressman and presidential hopeful Ron Paul would make it legal for producers to sell their product across state lines.
According to Dr.Paul in a statement:
“This legislation removes an unconstitutional restraint on farmers who wish to sell or otherwise distribute, and people who wish to consume, unpasteurized milk and milk products. Americans have the right to consume these products without having the federal government second-guess their judgment about what products best promote health.”
In addition to the new legislation proposed, Raw or fresh milk advocates are planning a rally on Capitol Hill on Monday, May 16.
The microbial risks of unpasteurized milk and cheeses
The US Food and Drug Administration position on the consumption of raw milk has been it should never be consumed due to the dangers of microorganisms.
There is in fact some risk of illness from eating and drinking unpasteurized milk and cheeses like E.coli, Salmonella, Campylobacter and Listeria to name a few, however, as Paul points out, this is a personal choice for the individual consumer, not for the government to decide.
